Brew Pour Drink

8 February 2012 by ST McNeil

Barrio Bewery head brewer Abe Figueroa and manager Reyna Rodriguez talk about beer in Tucson, Arizona. Another multimedia project for Advanced Reporting at the University of Arizona, this mini-documentary was shot over two days at the Barrio Brewery in Tuscon, Arizona. I hung out with Reyna at the bar one late afternoon, and then met Abe at dawn for a six-hour shoot inside the brewery during the mashing process. Two things I would change if deadlines parental and academic weren’t [...]

Jazz, Rap and Oud in Gaza

16 July 2011 by ST McNeil

From what everyone tells me, the jazz, rap and oud concert in The Gallery, Gaza’s premier venue, was abnormal. Since Hamas took over, music has been limited in the isolated territory of coastal Palestine. Rappers were forced to sign contracts stating they wouldn’t spit rhymes, according to rumour. Meena Al Gaza

16 July 2011 by ST McNeil

Roughly built like a square – a northern wall of a small pier ending in a ruined lighthouse and a southern wall forming a ninety-degree angle with a concrete-slab breaker – the port is full [...]

Baubles and trinkets of language

5 July 2011 by ST McNeil

Old Cairo Bazaar underneath the labyrinthine alleys of the Coptic Christian  neighborhood took me by surprise. Down a small path far below the ground, I walked past hundreds of black and white photographs of Egypt throughout the years. A gaggle of Egyptian tourists were listening to a guide explain Coptic history before a large storefront. Two enormous doors opened to inky blackness. Lights erupted as I entered: quadrants of halogen bulbs blinked to life exposing piece by piece the immensity before me. [...]
