Barrio Bewery head brewer Abe Figueroa and manager Reyna Rodriguez talk about beer in Tucson, Arizona.
Another multimedia project for Advanced Reporting at the University of Arizona, this mini-documentary was shot over two days at the Barrio Brewery in Tuscon, Arizona. I hung out with Reyna at the bar one late afternoon, and then met Abe at dawn for a six-hour shoot inside the brewery during the mashing process. Two things I would change if deadlines parental and academic weren’t looming: add music and film chugging. I wish I could share those awesome smells with y’all – that side of the process is simply amazing, as is eating the malt leftovers (cows seem to enjoy them too).
While I was there, however, an old guy pulled up in the parking lot and asked me if he could have a quick photo shoot outside the brewery. “Uh, I’m here taking pictures too – but I’m sure they don’t mind,” I responded.
“Can I then take a picture of you taking a picture of her?” he asked, pointing to a dolled-up lusty lady walking in heels towards a classic car.
Sometimes being a journalist works out.
